Very Modern (Old English)

Book of games commissioned by Alfonso X in 1283

Eala everyone! I am so happy to be introducing Modern Old English’s new mini project today, as this idea has been in the works for quite a while.

Recently, I’ve started an Instagram account under the handle modern_old_english (find me here!). On this platform I am going to be creating shorter-form content than I typically post on this website, with the goal to reach a broader array groups and make Old English as accessible as possible to more people.

What kind of content will I be putting up?

My intention is to make this account the epitome of Modern Old English, all stemming from my overarching hope to spread Medieval studies and the Old English language to more people and demographics. The videos I will be posting are all typical social media content that I come across with some frequency, but I speak and caption in both Old and Modern english as much as possible. I have a few already completed that I can’t wait to share with you (and yes, walking through a grocery store filming myself speaking an unintelligible language is very character building). I want people to be able to hear Old English as a spoken language, which is how I learned it, even though the vast majority of people familiar with the words have never heard it spoken or spoken it themselves. I want people to see that Medieval studies do indeed have a place in the modern world and culture.

Will I still be posting on this website?

YES! I love to produce longer writings and have a place to display my text-based projects. This website will continue to function as it always has and you can still expect frequent updates on Wæstm, as well as other article/essay type content. I do hope that you will check out the video and audio work that I do on my Instagram, as I find that learning through a combination of text, image, and sound works quite well to become familiar with more facets of a language.

As always, if anyone has any questions, feel free to leave a comment! I love hearing from you!
