What is Modern Old English?

Modern Old English is a passion project and an experiment run by me, Beatrix. I love everything in the Medieval world, be it culture, language, or literature. I am fourteen and have been studying Latin for four years and Old English for two, and I’m so excited to have a place to share my projects and ideas with the wider community!

Why Modern Old English?

Old English is wild. Sparky. Exciting. It’s a world of soaring ballads, daring fights. The greatest glories and the deepest sorrows lie within the worn pages of these epics. But when most people think about Medieval studies, what comes to mind are dusty books, waning university departments, and dull analytical pieces. That’s why I think it’s time to refresh the way we think and learn about this field. Here, I want to display new ideas, both creative and scholarly, but keeping in the joy, the sparkle, the exclamation points that the material holds for me. This is a place for seasoned professionals and intrigued beginners alike, to come together and delve into the world of Old English and Medieval studies.

  • Old English is the earliest form of the English language, spoken from around 450 -1100 AD in most of what is modern-day Britain by the Germanic tribes that settled there. Although it is no longer spoken today, we have many incredible pieces of literature and poetry written in Old English, and many people still study and work with it every day!
